Travel Tips

Things to Know Before You Book

1. Travelers heading to Tibet should maintain a moderate level of physical fitness. Those with severe hypertension, heart conditions, asthma, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, or an active cold are advised to avoid traveling to Tibet due to potential health risks.

2. Make your booking at least 20 days in advance to ensure the tour operator has sufficient time to process and deliver your Tibet Travel Permit. Typically, the Tibet Tourism Bureau takes about 8–9 days to issue the permit, followed by an additional 3–4 days for delivery to your address within Chinese Mainland.

3. Train or flight tickets to Tibet are not included in our tour package. However, if you book the tour with us, we can assist you in securing your tickets. Train tickets to Lhasa are generally released 15 days before departure. During peak travel periods - such as June to mid-October, the Chinese Spring Festival, and other major public holiday - tickets may be issued only 1-9 days before departure.

4. Prices are based on double occupancy. Solo travelers wishing to have a private room will need to pay an additional single-room supplement. Please contact our travel consultants for detailed pricing information.

5. Your airport or train station pick-up and drop-off in Lhasa must be arranged by the tour agency, as foreign visitors are not permitted to travel independently in Tibet.

Things to Know After You Book

1. Please provide photocopies of your passport and China L visa at least 15 days before your travel date to ensure sufficient time for processing your Tibet Travel Permit. If you hold a different type of Chinese visa, please contact your travel consultant.

2. It is recommended to carry enough cash for your entire trip. In Lhasa, you can withdraw money using a foreign bank card or exchange foreign currency for Chinese Renminbi (RMB/CNY).

3. Travel insurance is provided by The People’s Insurance Company (Group) of China Limited (www.epicc.com.cn) and covers only accident risks within China. We recommend that travelers purchase additional insurance independently for broader protection.

4. Altitude sickness is common on the plateau, with typical symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, and headaches. These reactions usually subside within two days. It’s advisable to consult your doctor before the trip and bring appropriate medication, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and nutritional supplements.

5. During your stay in Tibet, please follow local laws and respect religious practices and customs. Do not photograph military sites or other politically sensitive locations. Avoid media interviews, collecting confidential information, displaying or shouting antisocial slogans, using drones, or entering areas outside the approved itinerary.

6. Items such as knives, antiques, animal skulls, and similar souvenirs are prohibited from being taken out of China by customs. Please avoid purchasing these types of items.
